A2 Creation of My Poster - Step 4

The final touches to my poster was to add an Ident, this included a website for the company and a logo. Riddle Films is my invented film company; its name is supposed to relate to the psychological/thrilling side of films and relates to the genre my company focuses on.
I also added a website specific to the film as many other posters do; this makes the poster feel more professional.

A2 Creation of My Poster - Step 3

The next thing added to my poster was the credits; this was simple to put on as all I had to do was apply names to job titles. The font I used for this changed from Arial Narrow to Steel Tongs as the latter font looked more professional.

A2 Creation of My Poster - Step 2

The next step in the creation of my poster was to choose a font style and confirm any text I had previously decided to use on my poster. The Title was placed acrostically on the left hand side and to place the tagline and release date in a pyramid formation to draw the viewer’s eyes down across the poster.
Then I had to burn the edges of the skull to make the transition from the black background to the skulls white less distinctive. Using the Burn tool (set to Midtones at an exposure of 37%) softened the edge that met the skull.

A2 Creation of My Poster - Step 1

The first step in creating my poster was to set the white background to black. The picture that I used I was taken from a prop from an acting group.  I used a skull as it was a definitive symbol for my film.
Then I added the effect on the skull, I de-saturated the Skull (Image > Adjustments > De-saturate) and then applied a Glowing Edges filter (Filter > Stylize > Glowing Edges). This effect emphasised the skulls already supernatural and gothic motif.

A2 Planning - Layout 3

This is the basic layout for my final design. My designs while follow many conventions of a film poster they do not add the actors names.

When I come to make the final poster some things maybe changed but this is the what it should be similar to.

A2 Planning - Layout 2

For my next template design I decided to add the title name and my tagline and release date. The text for this layout is still basic as I hadn't made decisive choices on my fonts. My image will still be over the poster but the focus has shifted more to the image and release date..

Looking at many other movie posters I follow the conventions by still having a central image, information at the bottom and the title at the top.

A2 Planning - Layout 1

This layout is how I originally designed my poster to look like. I used simple text and a clear font to outlay where I wanted everything to be set on my poster. My image was to be over the poster but the principle area was to be eye line of the figure that was to be my main image.

I wanted the title to striking but recognisable to the audience.

This compared to many other movie posters shows that it conforms to the conventions by having a layout like the one above.

A2 Genre Research

A Psychological thriller is a specific sub-genre of the Thriller genre, while often integrating elements from the mystery and drama genre.
Thriller – Generally, thrillers focus on the plot over the character, and thus emphasise intense, physical action over the character's psyche. Psychological thrillers tend to reverse this formula to a certain degree, emphasizing the characters just as much, if not more so, than the plot.
Psychological thriller – Characters no longer relyupon physical strength to overcome their opposition(in the case of action-thrillers), but rather are rely on their mental resource, whether it be by a battle of wits or by battling for equilibrium in the character's own mind. The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters confliction and their way of preying upon one another's minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the other's mental state
Themes
Many psychological thrillers have emerged over the past years, all in various media (film, literature, radio, etc.). Despite these very different forms of representation, general trends have appeared throughout the narratives. Some of these consistent themes include:
Reality – The quality of being real. Characters often try to define what is true and what is not within the narrative.
Perception – A person's own interpretation of the world around him through his senses. Often characters misperceive the world around them, or their perceptions are altered by outside factors within the narrative (see Unreliable narrator).
Mind – The human consciousness; the location for personality, thought, reason, memory, intelligence and emotion. The mind is often used as a location for narrative conflict, where characters battle their own minds to reach a new level of understanding or perception.
Existence/Purpose – The object for which something exists; an aim or a goal humans strive towards to understand their reason for existence. Characters often try to discover what their purpose is in their lives and the narrative's conflict often is a way for the characters to discover this purpose.
Identity – The definition of one's self. Characters often are confused about or doubt who they are and try to discover their true identity.
Death – The ending of life. Characters either fear or have a fascination with death.

Examples of Psychological Thrillers in other formats
Manga/Anime - Death Note:The series centres around Light (an intelligent young adult who resents crime and corruption in the world) who attempts to create and rule a world "cleansed of evil" as "God" using the notebook, and the efforts of a detective known as L to stop him.
Literature – Melanie Wells: Her novels, such as When The Day of Evil Comes, The Soul Hunter and My Soul to Keep, feature the psychological mind games of Peter Terry - a demon who seeks to steal his victim's peace of mind and hope.
Games - Alan Wake is a story-driven survival horror/action game in the psychological thriller genre. The plot follows bestselling thriller novel writer Alan Wake as he uncovers the mystery behind his wife Alice's disappearance while both are on vacation in the small town of Bright Falls where he experiences blackouts and visions of characters and ideas from his latest novel, which he cannot remember writing, coming to life.

This genre has influenced my decision to focus on a supernatural/psychological thriller, the dark tones and the gothic nature appeal to the target audience my film is marketing for.

A2 Moodboard

This is my initial mood board it was designed with the idea of a faustian pact.  The image of the eye represents a window to the soul, there are many referneces to running out of time, the greek "know thyself and the mirror represent who you are, the are of course many pictures of hell and the devil which comes to the selling of the soul and the punishment, and Robert Johnson is a famous Blues Musician who in legends sold his soul to recieve his amazing guitar sklls.

However due to time constraints and my own lack of skill with photoshop my idea changed to a film based  around death and what it means to die.
